Ok – here some recent goings on – Have you heard of DDoS attacks or denial of service attacks.

The basic premise is that your email or web server gets targeted – computers infected with something like Conficker start visiting your site and sending emails or just pinging them – Now this wouldn’t be a problem if it was coming from just one computer or region of the world but 5 million suspected infections.
The normal response would be to trace back the offending attack and block it with a firewall by IP address – how do you block 5 million IP addresses?
The only solution is to shut down the services until the attack subsides
Companies are not ready for this
As we become more dependent on the internet it becomes a matter of national security and IMHO not enough is being done.
This is a big deal and companies need to have there web sites hosted through large companies like Verio that have business grade infrastructure and experience to deal with these problem.
We recently had a DDoS attack on one of our Verio hosted web sites – our response was to re-route email to another location and provide hourly updates until the web site was back online.
If you don’t have this kind of support you’ll need it soon.
